Get copies of your government files through the Privacy Act

Through the Privacy Act, U.S. citizens and permanent residents have the right to see and correct information that the government keeps on file about them.

Federal agencies create records if you paid income taxes, served in the military, applied for a federal benefit, or directly interacted with the government in other ways. Learn about your rights under the Privacy Act. And find out how to request information or learn what information the government does not have to disclose.
